Dr. Cherkes will address the new Tariffs imposed on Madagascar. His talk will address the following:

  1. How tariffs are calculated

  2. Many reasons for using tariffs

    • To generate Income

    • To protect a domestic industry

    • To make sure that strategic products are produced in house

  3. US- China trade imbalance

  4. How tariffs will influence the vanilla imports

  5. What is the end game in the tariffs’ wars?

Martin Cherkes is a Visiting Associate Professor of Finance at the Stern School of Business; he teaches a course in Futures and Options.

​

A native of Russia, he holds degrees from Novosibirsk State University (M. Sc., Mathematics) , Tel Aviv University, (MA , Economics) and from the University of Pennsylvania (Ph.D., Economics).

Prof Cherkes spent many years on Wall Street working in research and managerial capacities at Chase Manhattan Bank, at Continental Illinois and at Barclays Bank (where he was Senior VP and Global product manager for commodity risk management). In 1988 he was appointed alternate Board Member of the International Swap Dealers Association.

Prof. Cherkes went back to academe to teach at Wharton (1994-1997), Princeton (1997-2005), and Columbia (2006-2014).
